Hello everyone. We are new to this site and managed accidently to get in touch with Marisha who pointed us here to this site via HelpX. We are looking to see if it is possible to be able to obtain a homestay accommodation for a few days in Moldova during mid-April. Or even someone's garden or field where we could safely camp for a few days. Maybe this is a crazy idea but this is how we are travelling. We would like to be as close as possible to Burlacu. This would be in exchange for our skills/help while we stay which we can email to anyone who might be interested. We are Andrew and Anne who will be travelling (driving) to Moldova from UK beginning April as part of a bigger trip plan with our children. We have been involved with our two children (Jessica aged 9 and AJ aged 5) and their school in raising some money for educational equipment for the schools based in Burlacu. We spent our time last year doing many things - balloon race, puppet shows and generally making fools of ourselves and we had great fun. The teachers of our children's school as well as other associates visit Burlacu each year. But, we would like to make a visit there ourselves independantly with our children. We thought it might be a great way for our children to meet the children there and visa versa and help them to learn, meet one another etc. - hopefully forge some nice links. But the problem for us is where to stay that could be close to the Burlacu area. We thought maybe a homestay might be a good idea but would need relatively safe parking for 2 vehicles. We are unsure if this is a concern even so please excuse our ignorance. We would make arrangements ourselves to visit the schools but could do with some help if possible. We are only planning to stay a few days - maybe 3 nights or more (to suit you) before we must move on again. We would just ask for some quality time to visit the schools. Can anyone make us an offer or else advise of suitable accommodation for us while we are there? Even if it is a hotel or guest house. We are trying to keep our costs for the trip as low as possible so we would be very grateful for some advice. Also, please could you tell us when the school holidays are in Moldova during this period just so we can be sure it is a good time to come and visit? Maybe we should leave till the end of April? We can provide excellent references if needed. We will also speak to our children's school for more information but would like to do what we can on our own as much as we can. If anyone would like to find out more about us, please let us know - we will be glad to provide as much information as you need. Thank you for reading. Best regards, Anne.

Hi,
Thank you for your response. I hope someone can help us as we are finding it very difficult to source information about the area. It is based South West of Moldova. Our children's school spell it as Burlacu but it is also known as Burlacul or Burlaki. Please click on link as follows to see http://www.fallingrain.com/world/MD/64/Burlacu.html for more information regarding location.

Cahul is a destination as spa and health resort. The town and surrounding areas are richest with mineral springs enriched with bromine and iodine. The "Nufărul Alb" Balneotherapy and Well-being Centre consists of hospital, hotel and entertaining spots.

„SANATORIUL NUFARUL ALB“ S.R.L.
Str. Nucilor, 1, Cahul
tel: +373-299/ 23440; 24441
fax: +373-299/ 24645

Lodgings are also available at the famous tourist villa Albasadorf near Albota village, which is located 30 kms east of Cahul. It provides hiking, fishing, horse riding, tennis, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, chess, hammocks and national meals.

Have a safe and nice trip!

Thank you very much for your help. I thought it was near Cahul but was not positive about the distance away so believed we could end up being a bit lost or far away without some help. Hence my email. I will google Cahul in this case as this could be our base I feel sure. We are interested in camping if possible so will look into this. If anyone hears anything meantime, we would be very grateful. If not, we'll look into accommodatipn types.

Another question I have is regarding driving. We will be entering from Romania (4WD). Can anyone recommend good entry points or tell us more about what to expect regarding roads - sealed/unsealed. Sorry to be so ignorant.

You are coming from Romania to MD?
May I ask you why?
I avoid Romania like hell when going to MD, its the worst country I now in corruption and treating tourists like a POS.
I cross Ukraine cause:
the gas is a lot cheaper, the police is friendlier and the roads are better and you dont have to pay toll for their roads as you pay in RO for their rotten streets.
There are a lot less trucks on the roads in UA, simply its easier to drive.
But when coming fom RO to MD Albitsa/Leuseni is a good point to enter RO, when coming from UA I use Mamalyga/Criva.

Bon voyage or as the Moldovians say: Drum bun.
J.

If Cahul could be your base, then you could choose the custom/boeder point at Oancea (RO) - Cahul (MD). The town of Cahul is only 15 mins drive from the border.

If you come from Bucharest, this would be an option to reach Cahul.

Bucharest - Urziceni - Buzau (E85) - Braila - Galati - Oancea (RO) - (MD) Cahul

Galati is a big town with about 300,000 inhabitants famous for its steel industry and Cahul is only 65 kms/40 mi away of Galati.

Have a safe and nice trip!

Thank you Christian. The information is very helpful plus the information on the school holidays. I will feel a little more educated now when I speak with our children's school. I understand the roads can be bad from previous posts I have read regarding driving. We transit from West to East so Ukraine is not an option for us to enter from though we do plan to exit out this way. Right now I realise I need to get hold of a much better map! All the best for now.

Welcome. A map of the southern part of the Republic of Moldavia is available here:

Map of the Republic of Moldavia - sothern part

Just download the file on your desktop and the double click on it to get the larger view. The names of towns and villages are typed using the Cyrillic alphabet, but that would not be a major problem to use it.

Move to the bottom left corner of the map and locate the town of Galati - ГАЛАЦ (Cyrillic). Then move up along the western bank of the Prut River by passing through Tulucesti - Тулучешти (Cyrillic) until you reach Oancea - Оанча (Cyrillic). The custom office is located there. Turn to the right and cross the Prut River to enter into the Republic of Moldavia and then reach the town of Cahul - КАХУЛ (Cyrillic). The village of Burlacu - Бурлаку (Cyrillic) can be found on the map close to Cahul.

Have a safe and nice trip!
